Deciding to get a hair transplant is a major decision, with many different aspects to consider. At The Harley Street Hair Clinic, we specialise in the innovative FUE hair transplant procedure.
From the initial consultation right the way to after the procedure we receive a lot of different questions regarding hair transplants. Today we’re going to go through some of our Frequently Asked Question about the procedure.
FUE stands for Follicular Unit Extraction and it is the modern technique for Hair Transplantation. Using a specialised extraction instrument, a highly experienced doctor extracts hair follicles from the donor area. These follicles are then transferred to the recipient area using a specialist micro surgical needle. In order to do so, the surgeon will puncture the area of the scalp that will receive the grafts. The grafts are inserted at an angle with a specific density. This is to make sure a natural and realistic hair pattern is achieved.
The procedure that takes place at our Harley Street Hair Clinic, usually takes between 6-8 hours for a one-day session and 12-16 hours in total for a two-day session. The duration is dependent on the number of grafts required and your hair characteristics. The recipient will be updated regarding the number of grafts being transplanted during the surgical process and you’re welcome to ask any questions regarding your progress at any time.
We provide our patients with iPads to watch movies/documentaries, this is arguably more comfortable than reading a book. It is also possible to listen to music via your phone during the procedure. This is designed to make the procedure more enjoyable.
The procedure itself is relatively painless as we administer local anaesthesia to minimise pain and discomfort. The FUE treatment itself leaves you with almost no post-surgical pain and discomfort.
It is advised to wear loose, comfortable clothing, ideally generous fitting trousers or tracksuit bottoms are recommended. It is important to wear a wide neck t-shirt or a buttoned shirt as these are easier to remove after the procedure has taken place.
We will provide various lunch options for you at the clinic and if you have any dietary requirements please email us 7 days prior to your transplantation date.
Each client will be advised of their own personalised after care programme which will involve taking a 4-day course of antibiotics to ensure the prevention of infection. A brand new baseball cap will be provided at the end of the procedure and it is strongly recommended to wear this when going out in direct sunlight for the two weeks post procedure.
After the procedure, it is recommended that you take significant rest including not going back to work for between 7-14 days dependent on the size of the procedure and individual healing characteristics.
