Hair loss medication: Is there a new drug

By Alex

There are constantly new advances in medication with new discoveries being made on a daily basis. Research has shown a new drug that has the possibility of stopping hair loss, something many people will be interested in.

A new hair loss drug

New research has shown promising results for a trail of an experimental compound that can reverse hair loss and grey hair. The new drug can also help skin inflammation that arises from diets that are high in fat and cholesterol.

Mice were used for a new trial where researchers put them on a diet high in fat and cholesterol. The change in diet caused the mice’s fur to turn grey from black and they also saw skin inflammation. After this, the scientists gave the new experimental compound, which is believed to stop the production of a group of fats called glycosphingolipids (GSLs), hair was restored and the skin cleared up.

The scientists expressed that the findings highlighted that a Western diet causes hair loss, hair whitening and skin inflammation in mice and it is believed that a similar process occurs in men who lose hair and experience hair whitening when they eat a diet that is high in fat and cholesterol.

It is important to remember, as with all new medical trials more testing and research will be required. For this new drug, more testing is required to see if the compound would work safely and effectively on humans, as it did on the mice.

If the drug is researched further and developed for human consumption the scientists believe that in the future it can mean faster, more effective recovery from baldness, hair whitening in ageing populations.
