Hair transplant surgery scars

By Alex

We get asked a lot of questions by potential clients and those who have already had hair transplants, about hair transplant scars. We often get asked if hair transplants cause scars and if hair transplants can cover scars on the scalp. Today we’re telling you everything you need to know.

The hair transplant process

When it comes to hair transplant scarring, it is important to remember there is more than one hair transplant process. The most popular hair transplant treatments are follicular unit extraction (FUE) and follicular unit transaction (FUT).

FUE works by removing individual hair follicles from an area of the head where the hair is fuller (the donor area) with a specialist extraction tool. Those hair follicles are then prepared under a microscope and are ready to be transplanted with the use of a microsurgical extraction instrument to an area of the head where the hair is thinning.

FUT is often referred to as the strip method of hair transplantation; a strip of tissue is removed from an area of the scalp with fuller hair, usually found at the back of the scalp. This strip is then cut and divided into individual hair follicles, which are then prepared for the transplant. The individual follicles are then inserted into tiny incisions on the area of the scalp where the hair is thinning.

At the Harley Street Hair Clinic, we only offer the revolutionary FUE hair transplant procedure as it is minimally invasive and provides the most natural looking, realistic results possible.

Hair transplant scaring

It is a common misconception that getting a hair transplant will result in large, noticeable scars. FUE is a minimally invasive procedure that leaves almost no scarring. As small individual hair follicles are removed and transplanted any scarring is so tiny it is almost invisible to the naked eye.

However, FUT, can cause noticeable scarring to the scalp. As a strip of tissue is removed from the back of the scalp, once this is healed it can lead to noticeable scarring which can sometimes make it quite noticeable that you have had a hair transplant.

Fixing hair transplant scars

As mentioned above FUT hair transplant can leave you with noticeable scarring at the back of the scalp. In most cases, hair does not grow over scar tissue, which can leave you with an area of balding at the back of the scalp. This is something that the Harley Street Hair Clinic can actually fix. With the use of our FUE hair transplant method, we’re able to transplant hair follicles over the scarring which can help to disguises the scar.
