When you first start to notice hair loss, it can be tempting to rush to your GPs straight away to consult them. From there, you might find that you are referred to a dermatologist – but this isn’t always the right course of action for you, or your hair. This is why you should speak to a hair transplant specialist first!

Don’t Go To A Dermatologist!

Dermatologists are often the first port of call – after a GP – and are often where a GP will refer us.

While it can be tempting to think that you are in safe hands with a dermatologist, this can often be misleading. Dermatologists are experts in their field, naturally, but this is often not hair. They are sometimes not up to date with the latest advances in the diagnosis and treatment of hair loss.

There are endless amounts of hair loss vitamins and pills that promise to regrow your hair and make it thicker – but a hair loss specialist will be able to give you the best advice that is tailored to you.

There are many different causes of hair loss, so making sure that you are getting the correct treatment for your kind of hair loss is imperative.

Don’t Go To A Trichologist!

Trichologists are professionals who have studied trichology – the health of the hair and scalp. However, not all trichologists are licensed medical professionals or hair loss specialists and can sometimes give out the wrong advice.

Don’t Go To An Endocrinologist!

Endocrinologists are often another common referral from your GP. Endocrinologists specialise in working with your endocrine system – the system responsible for hormones and the diseases that result from hormonal imbalances.

While hormonal imbalances can often cause hair loss, making it common to see this type of specialist, there are also many other types of hair loss that are not caused by hormonal imbalance. Therefore, it is important to see a hair loss specialist – to ensure that you are getting the correct information.

See A Hair Loss Specialist

There are so many subtleties in hair restoration surgery that it is incredibly important to see a doctor who specialises in the field, not one who carries out many different types of cosmetic procedure – with “hair restoration” being one of them.

Just as with anything in life, experience counts. It is important to see a professional who specialises in hair restoration exclusively, as well as to meet personally with your surgeon and have an in-person evaluation – along with a micro-analysis of your scalp.

A hair loss specialist will be able to provide the most accurate advice on the cause of your hair loss, the severity, and most importantly, the options available to  you moving forwards. GPs and other medical professionals might be able to identify if your hair loss is caused by a serious medical condition, whereas a hair loss specialists is likely to be able to diagnose this as well as evaluate permanent solutions to the issue on the spot. It is important to note that some may not be suitable for hair transplant treatments or medications. To find out more, get in touch.
