Natural hair remedies: rosemary oil

As you can probably guess, something everyone wants to know about is natural hair remedies. At the Harley Street Hair Clinic, we get a lot of questions regarding hair remedies and more specifically natural remedies you can try from home.

There are a huge amount of hair remedies you’ll see on the internet, and we’re taking the task to look through the bulk of them and let you know if they can really help, or if you might need to look into other hair restorations treatments. Today, we’re looking at rosemary oil, remedy or rubbish? Read on to see what we think.

What is rosemary oil?

Rosemary is a herb used for both cooking and healing, it is native to the Mediterranean region, where it is used in both food and medicine and has been for centuries. Rosemary is often found in essential oil form. This means the oil is highly concentrated, the essential oil is then has a number of uses including cooking, cleaning, beauty, health and healing purposes.

Rosemary in essential oil form is a common home remedy that you can easily purchase, the oil is shown to have a range of uses from antioxidant benefits to anti-inflammation. In recent years, there has been a lot of noise claiming that the oil is great for hair growth and some believe the oil can even prevent hair loss.

It is believed that rosemary oil can encourage hair growth due to the fact the oil has anti-inflammatory properties, promotes nerve growth and can improve circulation. As the oil can strengthen circulation it can prevent hair follicles from being starved of blood supply. There are a number of studies and research that highlight that the use of rosemary oil and how it can work towards healing nerve endings and restoring hair growth. If your hair follicles do not get a good blood supply this can shorten the growth phase of the hair growth cycle and over time it can lead to hair loss.

With this in mind, it’s important to remember that rosemary oil will not completely stop hair loss – at current, there is no actual cure to stop hair loss, only preventative treatments and hair restoration treatments that can help to restore the appearance of a full head of hair. However, some of the properties found in rosemary oil can help to prevent hair loss for a period of time as well as stopping issues such as dandruff and an itchy scalp.
