Hair is produced by the follicles at the base of each strand of our hair. As hair itself is not actually alive, it is actually the hair follicle that reveals how healthy the hair is. There are many hair care products on the market that are used to repair, thicken and grow hair. If however, you do not have healthy hair follicles your hair will become prone to thinning and the hair can become brittle and prone to damage, leading to hair loss.

Diet plays a hugely important part in the health of your hair. Your daily nutrition can affect the growth and appearance of our hair. Your hair is comprised of the second fastest-growing cell in your body and you have around 120,000 hairs growing on your scalp at any given time, all of these hairs need support.

Both hair and scalp problems can arise from a deficiency or an excess of certain nutrients in your diet, and some can be the one and only cause of your hair loss. For example, an iron deficiency can cause hair loss, and on the other hand, too much vitamin A can be a cause of hair loss.

Here are some great foods to keep your hair healthy and thick.

Carrots

Carrots are a great food to help control hair loss because they are high in vitamin A. Vitamin A is needed by the body to make sebum; which is an oily substance that is created by our hair. Sebaceous glands provide a natural conditioner for the scalp resulting in healthy follicles. Carrots also contain beta-carotene which is a vital nutrient that works to promote hair growth.

Eggs

Eggs are rich in vitamin B and have a high amount of the vitamin biotin which is essential for hair growth and the overall health of the scalp. It also works to fight hair loss. Eggs also hold the vital nutrients such as portions, iron, zinc and Omega 6 fatty acids which help hair growth.

Spinach

Spinach is an important food to improve the health of the hair. It is a good source of iron, vitamin A and C and protein. One of the main causes of hair loss is an iron deficiency and this is why spinach can help to decrease hair loss.

Similar to carrots, spinach contains sebum which acts as a natural container, improving the health of the hair. The leafy vegetable also gives us with omega-3 acid, potassium, magnesium, iron and calcium which help to maintain a healthy scalp.

Sweet Potatoes

Vitamin A is necessary for cell growth and this includes hair. If you do not get enough vitamin A it can lead to dry, lifeless hair and dry skin. Sweet potato contains a good amount of vitamin A, copper, iron and protein which are essential for keeping hair loss problems away as it makes the tissues of the hair and scalp stronger. However, too much vitamin A can lead to hair loss, which is why it is important to get the vitamin from a balanced food source rather than a supplement.

Mixed Nuts

Mixed nuts can help reduce hair loss due to nutritional deficiencies. Almonds, Brazil nuts walnuts and other dried fruits such as raisins are a great source of Vitamin E and B, selenium, zinc and iron.

Salmon

Salmon is a great source of omega-3 acids and contains a large amount of protein, both of which promote hair growth.  Salmon also contains B vitamins such as B12 and other minerals and vitamins which are all necessary to improve dry hair and hair loss.

Beef

Both protein and Vitamin B promote hair growth, and beef supplies you with both. It is important to eat lean fresh beef on a regular basis to get the best possible hair growth results.

Sunflower Seeds

Sunflower seeds hold a large variety of nutrients including zinc, magnesium, protein, iron, vitamins B & E, copper, calcium and potassium. These all work together and stop hair loss.

A balanced diet

A balanced diet is vital to the health of your hair. It is important to give your body all of the nutrients and vitamins you need to keep your body and hair healthy.

Try eating a portion of protein (fish, chicken, lean meat, eggs) for breakfast and lunch each day with a portion of complex carbohydrates (whole wheat toast, potato’s, pasta, brown rice) and see if this improves the health of your hair. If you enjoy snacks, try snacking on nuts and seeds, which, can also help with the health of your hair.
