A healthy and balanced diet is essential to healthy hair if your body is lacking in certain vitamins and nutrients it can over time have a negative impact on the health and appearance of your hair. We’re looking at B12, specifically and if a lack of it can cause hair loss.

Vitamins and your hair

Hair cells are the second fastest-growing cells in the body. The hair is, however, non-essential tissue. This means the body will never send nutrients to the hair if another part of the body is lacking in it. Because of this, the hair is usually one of the first things to suffer when there is an imbalance in the body.

B12 and your hair

For the hair to grow and to stay as healthy as possible it needs a mixture of both vitamins and minerals and B12 is one of the essential vitamins for hair growth.

Vitamin B12 is an essential B Vitamin, it helps to keep the body’s nerves functioning efficiently, plays an important role in DNA production and helps to keeps your red blood cells healthy. The red blood cells carry oxygen to your tissues which helps to keep hair healthy.

Vitamin B12 deficiency

A lack of Vitamin B12 is commonly known as Vitamin B12 deficiency anaemia. This is where your body produces larger than normal red blood cells that do not work as efficiently as they should.

A Vitamin B12 deficiency can happen for a few different reasons. For some, your body is simply unable to absorb Vitamin B12, a deficiency can also occur when there is a lack of Vitamin B12 rich foods in the diet.

It is important to incorporate enough B12 into your meals, however, sometimes this is not possible due to dietary restrictions, illness and stress, in which case, you could look into B12 supplements.
