female thinning hair

Is your hair thinning? While hair loss is typically associated with men, women also experience thinning and even balding hair, especially as they get older. You might have once had a full head of locks but can now clearly see your scalp through your tresses. It’s never a nice moment to look in the mirror and realise your hair isn’t what it once was!

What Causes Thinning Hair in Women?

There are many possible causes of thinning hair, including:

  • Genetics
  • Age
  • Stress
  • Pregnancy
  • Alopecia
  • Certain Medications
  • Certain Deficiencies

If you’re experiencing thinning hair and don’t know the cause, it’s a good idea to book an appointment with your doctor. If your hair thinning is caused by a deficiency or medication, they may be able to help you. Deficiencies in vitamin B12, folate, biotin, and riboflavin have all been linked to hair loss, and taking these could help restart hair growth and restore your hair. [1] It might be that you have a form of alopecia and your doctor may be able to help you with treatment. If you’re concerned you might have alopecia, here’s everything you need to know about alopecia, from its causes to the symptoms.

Can You Always Reverse Hair Thinning?

Not necessarily. Something like a vitamin deficiency can be reversed, but if your hair is thinning due to genetics or ageing, then you likely won’t be able to fully restore your locks to how they once were (without surgery). That’s why female hairstyles for thinning hair are so popular. They are a way to disguise your thinning hair without growing it back. Plus, many of them look awesome!

The Best Female Hairstyles for Thinning Hair

The good news is that there are plenty of cool female hairstyles for thin hair. If you want your hair to look thicker and fuller, any of the following hairstyles will help.

An Undercut Haircut

When you think of an undercut hairstyle, you likely think about a men’s hairdo. However, many women have embraced undercut female hairstyles over the years, and it can look incredible! Basically, an undercut is when the bottom section of your hair is shaved. From there, your hair can be any style (even long). It works for women who are experiencing hair thinning at the bottom, as shaving makes hair loss look more intentional. Have a look for some amazing undercut designs for some cool female hairstyles.

Pixie Cut

Short hair is often much more flattering for people with hair loss, as longer hair can pull at the scalp and lead to further hair loss. For this reason, the pixie cut is one of the best haircuts for thinning hair! It’s an adorable cut that still gives you plenty of personality. If you want to stand out a little more, then why not add in a short undercut? Plus, the cropped look makes taking care of your hair much easier – and you won’t be spending as much money on shampoo and conditioner.

Blunt Bob

A blunt bob is a fantastic middle ground if you want to go shorter to disguise your thinning hair but don’t want to chop it all off. This sleek, mid length hairstyle is timeless and flatters most faces. Plus, the upkeep is wonderfully simple (you might want to invest in a pair of hair straighteners!). With a bob haircut, you avoid the long, straggly hair look, allowing your locks to look healthier and thicker without going for a super short hairstyle.

Long Layers

Are you a big fan of long hair? You don’t have to embrace a short haircut just because you have thin hair – not when you opt for long layers. It might seem counterproductive to cut layers into your already thinning hair, but the layered look can actually add volume and make your hair look thicker. Your hair will have more body, movement, and texture; it will look anything but thin and flat!

Curtain Bangs

If you’re looking for female hairstyles for hair thinning at the temples, look no further than curtain bangs. Curtain bangs are longer pieces of hair at the front that frame the face. Unlike straight bangs, they are pulled to the side, giving them the curtain appearance. Not only are they very trendy right now, but they are also incredibly easy to pull off. Plus, it’s not a massively drastic haircut, and they are easy to grow back out if you decide they’re not for you!

A Perm

What about a perm? A perm is a semi-permanent hairstyle that involves adding curls or waves to your hair. These became very popular in the 1980s [2], with many people still enjoying the benefits to this day (and today, perms don’t look as big as the 1980s ones). The reason a perm is so good for thinning hair is that it adds life to the locks, with the curls adding plenty of volume. Keep in mind that perms use harsh chemicals to achieve the look, so if your thinning hair is due to excessive damage, it might be a better idea to avoid the perm and look at other hairstyles for thinning hair.

Wigs and Extensions

Sometimes, a change of hairstyle isn’t enough. If your hair is thinning to the point you have balding patches, using a wig or hair extensions may be the better option. The good news is that many wigs and hair extensions look incredibly natural, so no one would need to know you’re wearing anything! They are a quick, easy way to restore your confidence. Plus, many hair extensions last a long time, so you can even wake up with a head full of hair.

A Hair Colour Change

What about changing your hair colour? Some hair colours make thin hair more noticeable. Generally, dark hair makes thinning hair more obvious, while lighter shades draw less attention. That doesn’t mean you need to get the bleach out (you probably shouldn’t if you want to avoid thinning hair!), but going a few shades lighter might be a good idea. Always go to a hairdresser for hair dyeing, especially if you’re worried about damaging your hair further. If your hair is already dry and damaged, it may be better to avoid colouring your hair and embrace your natural colour. After all, some people get thin hair from years of dying it.

Treating Hair Loss

Is a hairstyle not enough for you? While these female hairstyles for thinning hair are an excellent way of dealing with hair loss, you might want a more permanent solution. Luckily, there are ways to help make your hair look thicker.

One way to treat hair loss is via a minoxidil prescription. While this medication is mainly prescribed to men with hair loss, there have been plenty of studies to show that it can help women with hair loss, too. It might just work for you!

If an underlying condition is contributing to your hair loss (such as a thyroid disease or vitamin deficiency), then you’ll have to go to your doctor to address this. If you have a deficiency, taking a supplement might be the simple solution to restoring your hair.

For more extreme female hair loss, you might even consider a female transplant. Hair transplants have come a long way over the years. Now, you can achieve highly natural results with a minimally invasive surgery (and even go home the same day).

Is a Hair Transplant Right for You?

A woman who has experienced slightly thinning hair might find success trying out different ladies hairstyles. However, that won’t be enough for everyone. If your hair loss is more extreme, a hair transplant might be the best option for you. Here are some signs you may be a good candidate for a female hair transplant:

  • You’re over 30.
  • You are experiencing female pattern baldness.
  • You have a healthy section of hair follicles to act as a donor area.
  • You are overall healthy.
  • You know what has caused your hair loss.
  • Your hair loss has been affecting your confidence.

Of course, you’ll need to speak to an experienced surgeon to determine whether this kind of procedure is right for you. At Harley Street Hair Clinic, you can schedule consultations on our handy app, making the process straightforward. Your years of good hair don’t have to be behind you!

Haircuts for Women with Thinning Hair: Will You Try One Out?

Looking in the mirror and seeing that your once full, bouncy locks are now thin and lifeless will always make you feel upset. That’s natural. You don’t have to deal with your hair looking thin, though – it might just be a simple case of changing up your hairstyle! If you need help deciding how to wear your hair, speaking to a hairdresser is always a good idea, as they can help you achieve the perfect look for your features. Of course, if your hair loss is more extensive, perhaps with a receding hairline, and a hairstyle can’t hide it, a hair transplant or other hair restoration treatments might be the better route.
