What is a Beard Transplant?

A beard transplant is a type of microsurgery that restores facial hair, allowing the patient to regrow a full beard. It can fill in beard gaps, create a full beard from scratch, define a goatee, or reshape the beard line – it is all about the patient’s preferences and beard hair-loss experience.

A beard hair transplant uses the same proven techniques of FUE (follicular unit extraction) and FUT (follicular unit transplantation) used for scalp hair transplants, but adapted for the face to create a more natural appearance that mimics beard growth.

Why Men Choose a Beard Transplant

Beard restoration surgery is popular because almost half of men find it difficult to grow a full beard, even long into adulthood. For many, it’s not about grooming habits or diet – it’s due to genetics.

A full beard or patchy beard transplant fixes what genetics can’t and addresses what no supplement or topical product can. It takes hair follicles and implants them into patchy areas, allowing new hair to grow there.

Beyond genetics, other men seek beard transplants for:

  • A generally patchy beard with sparse areas
  • Scarring in the beard area, perhaps from acne or injuries
  • Hair loss caused by alopecia barbae or other skin conditions
  • A desire to enhance or reshape the beard line for aesthetic reasons
  • Supplementing beard growth following testosterone hormone therapy
  • Replacing the loss of beard hair after burns, trauma, or medical treatment

Men will always want the option to grow a thick, healthy beard. Beard trends come and go, but a full beard transplant in the UK gives men the freedom to have and style their beard however they please, whether that involves shaping a defined edge, keeping only a goatee, or even shaving it all off completely (the hair follicles will stay intact).

Keep in mind that some causes of beard hair loss may impact transplant suitability – for example, certain skin conditions. It’s important to book a consultation to determine whether you’re a good candidate for the procedure.

A Natural-Looking Option

A beard transplant offers a completely natural result that lasts a lifetime. Once the full results come through, you can style, shave, and enjoy your full beard however you would like.

The micro-surgical procedure uses techniques that ensure the transplanted facial hair matches the natural direction of the existing beard. It’s a one-day procedure with a high success rate, with many men loving their new look.

How a Beard Transplant Works

There are two main methods for beard transplants in the UK: FUT and FUE. Both techniques involve harvesting healthy hair follicles from the donor area (usually the back or sides of the scalp) and implanting them precisely into the beard area.

The main difference between beard restoration surgery and scalp hair restoration surgery is the angle, depth, and direction of each follicle. Facial hair grows at shallower angles than scalp hair, so natural results depend on the surgeon’s skill in replicating this.

At HS Hair Clinic, we have highly trained, award-winning surgeons who have mastered this technique.

Step by Step

Step 1: Consultation & Beard Design

Every beard restoration surgery begins with a detailed consultation to assess the extent of beard patchiness, discuss the desired beard style/coverage, and evaluate the donor area. The process is always patient-focused, and both the surgeon and the patient agree on the final beard line design. It’s collaborative, and the patient has the option to change their mind until a perfectly fine result is decided upon!

Step 2: Choosing the Technique – FUE or FUT

FUT and FUE are the two main techniques for beard transplants.

FUE (follicular unit extraction): This involves extracting individual follicular units using a micro-punch technique, leaving small, dot-like marks that heal quickly and are invisible. FUT beard transplant recovery time is swift, and there is minimal scarring. However, it is slightly more expensive, and it takes longer than FUT.

FUT (follicular unit transplantation): FUT involves the surgeon extracting a strip of scalp, then dissecting the individual grafts, leaving a linear scar at the donor site. It is generally considered the more efficient option because the procedure is faster and involves implanting larger graft counts.

At HS Hair Clinic, we only offer FUE. FUT is an outdated method, so there will never be a debate between the two when you come to our team.

Step 3: Local Anaesthetic & Preparation

Before the actual transplantation, the donor area and beard area are numbed with local anaesthetic. In some cases, a sedative is administered for patient comfort. With these, the procedure is pain-free.

Step 4: Graft Extraction

The surgeon extracts grafts from the donor area. For beard transplants, single hair follicles are preferred for a natural-looking density, particularly along the beard line and moustache area. In the central beard area, multiple hair follicles can be used because of their density.

Step 5: Graft Preparation

The extracted grafts from the donor area are sorted, inspected under magnification, and stored in a preservation solution. Then, the recipient area is prepared for implantation.

Step 6: Beard Implantation

During the implantation process, the surgeon makes tiny incisions across the beard following the natural growth direction and angle of the existing facial hair. Each graft is placed individually with absolute precision.

This part is the most technically demanding, with surgeons needing to achieve precise angulation of the hair, typically 10-30 degrees for facial hair.

The surgeon will be precise with the angle, depth, and choosing whether single vs multi hair grafts. It’s a careful, slow process that ensures the hairs grow just as natural beard hairs would.

Step 7: Post-Procedure & Recovery

Patients are always well looked after following the procedure. They are given a full aftercare package, including a specialist shampoo and saline spray, along with precise guidance on treating their scalp following the procedure. Following the FUT or FUE beard transplant, initial growth appears at 2 to 3 months, with full results showing at 12 months.

Who is a Good Candidate for a Beard Transplant?

The good news is that beard transplants suit a variety of patients with different beard-related issues, including men with patchy beards, men seeking a specific beard shape, and transgender people seeking gender-affirming care. Good candidates include:

  • Men with sparse or patchy beard growth due to genetics, which is the most common reason
  • Men with scarring in the beard area from acne, injuries, burns, or previous surgery
  • Those seeking to enhance or reshape their beard line, even if they can grow some beard hair
  • Men who have experienced beard hair loss due to non-scarring skin conditions
  • Transgender men supplementing hormone therapy-induced beard growth
  • Patients with a healthy donor area, which means sufficient follicles at the back or sides of the scalp

Who May Not Be Suitable

Not everyone is suitable for a beard transplant, however.

For example, patients with alopecia barbae (an autoimmune condition that causes patchy hair loss) may not be suitable. This is because the immune system may reject the transplanted hair follicles, making the process not worth it. In this case, non-surgical options should be explored. Booking a consultation with our hair specialist team will show you the various options that can help you regrow a full beard in this situation.

Other factors that may get in the way of a beard transplant include:

  • Having limited donor hair (possibly due to advanced scalp hair loss)
  • Having an active skin condition (such as dermatitis or psoriasis) in the beard area

The Benefits of a Beard Transplant

The benefits of a beard transplant make it clear why so many men choose this procedure.

  • Permanent results: The hair that grows after a beard transplant keeps on growing forever, no matter how much you shave.
  • A natural look: The surgeon uses angle and depth precision so that the beard looks just like a natural one. Plus, it grows continuously.
  • Full styling freedom: Once a full beard transplant is completed, the patient can style it as they please, whether that involves having some stubble, growing a full beard, or opting for a clean-shaven look.
  • Targeted treatment: The procedure can be targeted towards very specific zones of the beard.
  • Minimal scarring: The FUE technique, performed correctly, in particular, leaves no visible marks in the beard area or donor site.
  • Micro-surgical precision: Each follicle is placed at the correct angle and depth to match natural beard growth.
  • One-day procedure: The process is completed in a single visit in most cases.
  • Fast return to normal activities: Most patients return to desk work within 2 to 3 days after a FUE beard transplant.
  • High success rate: 97–100% graft survival rate when performed by experienced surgeons.

What to Expect on the Day

Our surgeons make the process as comfortable as possible for patients. Here’s what to expect.

Arrival: When you first arrive, you’ll meet with the surgeon who will conduct the design consultation. During this process, the beard line is drawn, photos are taken, and the plan is finalised and confirmed with the patient.

Local anaesthetic: For comfort, a local anaesthetic is applied to both the beard and the donor area. This means the procedure is pain-free.

The procedure: The surgery takes between 2 and 8 hours, depending on the graft count and complexity. In some cases (such as when more than 1,500 grafts are needed), the surgery may be split over two consecutive days.

Regular breaks and refreshments: Patients are well looked after, always given regular breaks and refreshments throughout the day.

Post-procedure care and review: After the beard transplant is complete, the surgeon confirms graft placement. The patient is also given a full aftercare package and detailed instructions for caring for their beard area.

Beard Transplant Recovery Timeline

  • Days 1-3: Some redness, swelling, and small crusts along the beard area. This is normal.
  • Days 3-5: Some swelling on the face, especially around the cheeks and under the eyes. You can manage this with anti-swelling medications.
  • Days 5-10: Crusts around the beard begin to shed. It’s important to avoid touching the area.
  • Day 10+: Patients can begin lightly shaving and trimming the area.
  • Months 1-3: During these months, patients experience shock loss, which is completely normal – the hair follicles remain intact and active.
  • Months 3-6: New hair growth becomes visible with increased density as time goes on.
  • Month 12: Full results of the beard transplant show through. The beard grows naturally with normal thickness and texture.

Beard Transplant Aftercare

  • Patients are given a full aftercare pack with:
    • Specialist shampoo
    • Saline spray
    • Written post-op care notes
    • Pain relief
    • Anti-swelling medication
    • Access to a 24-hour aftercare line

The instructions will include things like avoiding strenuous exercise and direct sun exposure for at least one week. There will also be specific guidance on when to begin washing, shaving, and trimming the beard.

The surgeon may also recommend a hair medication, such as minoxidil, to boost hair growth. When minoxidil is used, the beard hair maintains its thickness.

UK Beard Transplant Cost

In the UK, beard hair transplants typically cost between £2,000 and £8,000. The exact price depends on the grafts required and the extent of coverage needed. So, procedures covering small patches or the moustache area will sit at the lower end, whereas full beard transplants requiring 2,000–3,500+ grafts will be on the higher end.

Wondering how many grafts for a beard transplant? Here’s an idea of how many grafts you might need, depending on the coverage required:

Moustache only: 300–600 grafts

Goatee: 500–900 grafts

Patchy beard fill: 800–1,500 grafts

Full beard from scratch: 2,000–3,500+ grafts

Factors that Affect Cost

Of course, several factors affect the final cost of the beard transplant, including:

  • Number of grafts required: determined by the size and number of areas being treated
  • Technique used: FUE and FUT are priced differently; FUE is typically higher per graft
  • Whether the procedure covers one zone or multiple zones (full beard, moustache, sideburns)
  • Session length: procedures requiring two consecutive days will reflect this in the quote
  • Surgeon experience and clinic reputation
  • Clinic location: A beard transplant in London may cost more compared to other cities,

Finance Options

Many men do not pay for the beard transplant upfront; instead, they use finance options, which we offer here at HS Hair Clinic.

Beard transplants are increasingly considered an elective aesthetic investment, and financing options remove the barrier to conversion, particularly for younger male patients. Check out our finance options to see how you could spread the cost.

Beard Transplant Results: What to Expect

It’s important to know what to expect from each stage before deciding on this beard restoration procedure. It’s a lengthy process, but one that results in a full beard that will grow forever.

2 to 6 weeks following the transplant is when shock hair loss happens. This can be concerning, but rest assured that the hair follicles stay in place and active during this time. The first signs of visible beard density appear around 6 months, at which point patients can begin styling and shaving however they like. Then, the full results are available at month 12.

Remember that results are permanent, with transplanted follicles that grow for life and behave exactly like natural beard hair.

General FAQs

A beard transplant is a permanent, microsurgical procedure that restores facial hair in areas where it is absent, sparse, or patchy. Healthy hair follicles are taken from a donor area on the scalp and implanted precisely into the beard zone, including the full beard, moustache, goatee, sideburns, or beard line. The transplanted hair grows naturally and can be styled, shaved, or shaped as normal.

A beard transplant is suitable for most men with sparse or patchy facial hair, including those with genetic thinning, scarring, or post-injury hair loss. Good candidates have a healthy donor area at the back or sides of the scalp. Patients with alopecia barbae (an autoimmune condition) are usually not suitable for transplant, but other treatments are available, and our team can advise. A consultation is needed to assess your individual suitability.

Yes. Transplanted follicles are genetically resistant to loss, so the results are lifelong. Unlike topical treatments that require ongoing use, a beard transplant is a one-time procedure. The transplanted hair grows, thickens, and behaves exactly like natural facial hair.

You will be able to see your new beard shape immediately after the procedure. Initial shedding of transplanted hairs (shock loss) occurs in the first few weeks, and this is completely normal. New growth begins around month 3, with visible density from 6 months. Full results are typically seen at 12 months.

Beard transplants at HS Hair Clinic range from ÂŁ2,000 to ÂŁ8,000 depending on the number of grafts required and the areas being treated. A moustache-only procedure requires fewer grafts and will be priced accordingly – a full beard from scratch, for example, requires significantly more. Use our graft calculator for a preliminary estimate or book a free consultation for a personalised quote.

Alopecia barbae is an autoimmune condition that specifically causes patchy hair loss in the beard area. Because the immune system is responsible for hair loss, a beard transplant for alopecia barbae is generally not recommended, as results may be unpredictable. Our trichology team can assess your condition and recommend the most appropriate treatment pathway.

Yes. Transgender beard transplants are popular as they are an excellent way to supplement or enhance beard growth initiated by testosterone therapy. Our surgeons work with transgender men to design a natural, masculine beard line that complements the patient’s features and goals. A consultation will help determine the best approach.

Procedure FAQs

We use FUE for beard transplants, and it is preferred by most patients. It extracts individual follicles using a micro-punch, leaving minimal scarring in the donor area: an important consideration for patients who keep their scalp hair short. We will never recommend FUT because it is a dated method.

The number of grafts depends entirely on the area being treated and the density desired. As a guide: a moustache or small patch typically requires 300–600 grafts; a goatee area 500–900 grafts; filling a patchy full beard 800–1,500 grafts; and a full beard created from minimal facial hair can require 2,000–3,500+ grafts. Your surgeon will provide an accurate assessment at the consultation.

Most beard transplants are completed in a single day, typically taking between 2 and 8 hours depending on the number of grafts required. FUE procedures generally take longer than FUT. For very high graft counts (usually above 1,500), the procedure may be split across two consecutive days.

The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during the transplant. The numbing injections are the most uncomfortable part for most patients. Any post-procedure soreness is mild and manageable with over-the-counter pain relief, which is included in your aftercare pack.

FUE patients can typically return to normal activities within 5–7 days. FUT patients may need 10–14 days before resuming normal routines. Most patients return to desk-based work within 2–3 days (FUE) or after a week (FUT). Strenuous exercise and direct sun exposure should be avoided for at least one week.

Avoid shaving or cutting the beard area for at least 10 days after the procedure. This allows the grafts to secure and any crusting to heal fully. After day 10, gentle trimming can begin: your surgeon will confirm the right timing based on your individual healing progress.

Common temporary side effects include redness, swelling (which may spread to the cheeks and under the eyes in the first few days), itching, and small crusts across the transplant area. These resolve within 1–2 weeks. Anti-swelling and pain relief medication is provided. Shock shedding of transplanted hairs in weeks 2–6 is normal: the follicles remain active and new growth follows.

Most patients achieve the coverage they want in a single session. However, patients with very advanced patchiness or those seeking very high density in a large area may benefit from a follow-up session. This will be discussed honestly during your consultation.
