Xherdan Shaqiri hair transplant 2015

Footballers spent much of their careers in the spotlight, which means special attention is often given to their appearance. Hair transplants to fix a receding hairline are particularly popular in the football world, as it’s common for even young men to lose their hair, with around 30% of men experiencing male pattern baldness in their 30s. [1] If done well by the right clinic, hair transplants can greatly improve the hairline, restoring hair in the most natural-looking way that lasts for a lifetime.

Who is Xherdan Shaqiris?

One famous footballer who may have chosen to get hair transplant surgery is Xherdan Shaqiris. Xherdan Shaqiris is a professional Swiss footballer who predominantly plays as an attacking midfielder. As well as playing for the Switzerland national football team, Xherdan Shaqiris has also played in the premier league, starting with Stoke City in 2015 and then playing for Liverpool in 2018 – his last season with Liverpool was 2022/2023. He is a skilled footballer known for his spacing and balancing abilities while on the pitch.

What is a Hair Transplant?

A hair transplant is a surgical hair loss treatment that involves taking hair grafts from one area of the scalp and transplanting them to an area of hair loss. A typical hair transplant for a person experiencing male pattern baldness would involve taking hair follicles from the sides of the scalp where there is plenty of hair growth and then placing those same hair follicles in the hairline where hair loss has occurred. Once these hair follicles take root, they will begin to grow new hairs, eventually leading to full hair regrowth.

It should be noted there are two distinct types of hair transplants available: FUE (follicular unit extraction) and FUT (follicular unit transplantation). The FUT hair transplant involves a surgeon grafting a full strip of hair from the scalp, whereas the FUE hair transplant takes individual follicles from the scalp for a more natural-looking result.

Did Xherdan Shaqiris Get a Hair Transplant?

Right now, Xherdan Shaqiris has not confirmed whether or not he has had a hair transplant. This is not wholly surprising, as many footballers (and other celebrities) decide not to openly talk about their cosmetic procedures, and there is still some stigma around getting a hair transplant. However, it’s clear that more celebrities have opted for hair transplants than those who have confirmed it, and Xherdan Shaqiris may be one of them. When looking at before and after photos of his hairline, most people would agree that – yes, he likely got a hair transplant.

Xherdan Shaqiris’s Hairline Through the Years

To see evidence of the Xherdan Shaqiris hair transplant, it helps to look a little closer at his hairline through the years during his time in the spotlight.

Xherdan Shaqiris Hair: 2015

Xherdan Shaqiris’s hair loss occurred quite early – in 2015, when he was in his mid-20s. Around this time, you can already see that he has a receding M-shaped hairline.

Moving forward a couple of years to 2018, you can see that Xherdan Shaqiris’s hairline looks even further back, indicating that his hair loss is getting progressively worse. At this stage, he’s at stage 3 or 4 of the Norwood Scale. [2]

Xherdan Shaqiris Hair: 2019

Xherdan Shaqiris Hair: 2020

When Xherdan Shaqiris returned to the football pitch in 2020, it was with a whole new look – this time, his hairline was not as receded, indicating that he underwent a hair transplant during his time off the pitch with his injury.

Xherdan Shaqiris Hair: 2024

Fast forward to 2024, Xherdan Shaqiris has decided to retire from his natural Switzerland team. Regarding his hair, it seems as though his hair transplant results have stayed put, as his hairline is still much more forward than it was in his earlier career.

What Type of Hair Transplant Did Xherdan Shaqiris Get?

Like most people who opt for hair restoration surgery, Xherdan Shaqiris seemed to have gotten a FUE hair transplant. This makes sense, as it’s the less invasive option and typically provides more natural results than the FUE hair transplant.

Was Xherdan Shaqiris’s Hair Transplant Successful?

While Xherdan Shaqiris’s hair undoubtedly looks much fuller following his (apparent) hair transplant, if you look a little closer, there are signs his hair transplant didn’t give perfect results. Looking at pictures of his hairline today, you can see that he has what’s known as a zig-zag hairline – one that is slightly uneven and unnatural looking.

So, the answer to whether Xherdan Shaqiris’s hair transplant was successful is a tricky one. On the one hand, he definitely has fuller, thicker hair with a more forward hair transplant now, and those results have stayed put since 2020. However, the results are a little skewed – while his hair looks great from afar, it’s obvious that the hairline isn’t natural when looking closer.

How Successful Are Hair Transplants?

Hair transplants have a very high success rate – survival rates of the hair grafts are around 90-95%. [3] So, if you decide to get a hair transplant, you can expect hair to grow where it previously hadn’t. However, the hair graft survival rate does not determine how natural the results look. If your idea of a successful hair transplant encompasses natural results, you will need to find a high-quality hair clinic with skilled surgeons who understand the complexity of this procedure and work with your hairline to give tailored results that look no different from natural hair growth.

Hair Transplant Cost

The cost of a hair transplant depends on several factors, including:

  • The Clinic You Choose
  • The Number of Grafts You Need
  • Whether You Choose FUT or FUE

Generally, you can expect to pay between £1,000 to £30,000 when getting a hair transplant in the UK. With such a permanent procedure, it’s better to spend a little more money to attend a high-quality clinic so you can fully enjoy the results.

Other Footballers Who Have Gotten a Hair Transplant

It is not only Xherdan Shaqiris who has opted for a hair transplant – many other footballers have decided to get this procedure for fuller-looking hair.

David Beckham: The previous England captain experienced hair loss during his football career, which must have been hard as he was previously known for his great-looking hair! While it was never confirmed, his transformation from his balding head to full locks indicates he opted for hair restoration surgery.

Wayne Rooney: Wayne Rooney, another previous England captain, has also had a hair transplant – this time, the footballer was very open about it. He got his first transplant in 2011 and then went back for a second procedure in 2013.

Jurgen Klopp: The Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp got a hair transplant in Germany in 2012. He was very happy with the results, and he can be seen with plenty of hair to this day.

Antonio Conte: The ex-footballer and current Italian football manager experienced significant hair loss in his career. Nowadays, he can be seen with a full head of hair, and that’s likely thanks to several hair transplants, including in around 2000 and another in 2007.

Rob Holding: Another footballer to have a hair transplant is Rob Holding. The talented English footballer had his procedure done in 2021 at the age of 25.

As you can see, this hair restoration surgery is very popular in the football world! There is speculation that many other footballers, including Harry Kane and Andros Townsend, have had hair transplants.

If you have experienced hair loss and want a solution, a hair transplant is an excellent option.
