Losing your hair is a natural part of life. It can happen for a variety of different reasons and in some cases, it can be permanent – leaving you with bald patches. If you are experiencing permanent hair loss – do not panic, it can be treated. We at The Harley Street Hair Clinic are experts in FUE hair transplants and we can help you.

During our consultation stage before a hair transplant procedure, we will always explore your type of hair loss, the history of your hair loss and how severe your hair loss is. With all of this information, we can come to a decision as to whether or not you are a good candidate.

In some cases, a hair transplant might not work as well for you as someone else and we want you to know that. Before you decide to go ahead with surgery think carefully about your expectations and discuss them with your surgeon. Today we’re going to look at the perfect hair transplant candidate to give you an idea.

You need to have some hair

First things first, although we can restore a receding hairline and cover your bald patches, in order to have a hair transplant, you need to have donor hair. Sadly a hair transplant is not a viable option if you are completely or almost bald.

Hair replacement candidates need to have healthy hair growth at the back and sides of the head, as they will serve as donor areas. A donor area is the place on the head where hair grafts are taken from and then inserted to the balding recipient area. In order to get the best results, you must have sufficient hair in the donor area.

Your hair type

The different characteristics of your hair can also affect the success of a hair transplant. Factors such as hair colour, texture and waviness or curliness may affect the cosmetic result. The colour of your hair and how it relates to the underlying skin colour is important. During your consultation, we will discuss how well a hair transplant will work on your colour and type of hair.

The cause of your hair loss

Hair loss can happen for different reasons and the cause of your hair loss will also determine if you’re suitable for a hair transplant. Stress-related hair loss is a good example of when we would not recommend a hair transplant, hair loss through stress is not permanent and a hair transplant would not be worthwhile for you.

Those who have been losing their hair due to male pattern baldness for a few years are the perfect hair transplant candidate. Our hair loss specialists will discuss the cause of your hair loss with you during a consultation to ensure a hair transplant is the correct treatment for you.

Age and severity of hair loss

A receding hair line is something men of a young age can start to form. This receding hair line can often knock your confidence and lead to you investigating the option of a hair transplant. In some cases men ages as young as 21 think they need a transplant for their receding hair line, when in actual fact they’re not ready.

During our consultation we will look at the severity of your hair loss, it could be that your hair has began to thin in which case we might recommend scalp micropigmentation, or maybe your receding hairline actually isn’t as bad as you think and we might advise you to come back to us in a couple of years.

General health

Hair transplantation is only considered as a minor surgery, however, there are still risks involved and being in optimum health is very important. Patients over 45 are required to have an ECG check to check the health of their heart. Other medical factors that can vary from patient to patient will be discussed during a consultation, and these can determine If you’re a good candidate.

A previous bad hair transplant

Sadly, some people might have had a hair transplant procedure in the past that has not gone exactly as they would have hoped. This can happen if you do not get the right kind of hair transplant, or if you focus on getting a cheaper hair transplant.

Sometimes, a hair transplant might not be planned with future hair loss in mind and this could result in a clinic using a larger number of donor hair. Your donor hair is a finite resource and if it isn’t used wisely with enough preserved for future transplants it can mean you’re not a suitable hair transplant candidate. It’s very important to remember that your donor hair is the most important factor of a hair transplant, and the quality of a transplant should always come before the price.

Are there any other treatments I can try?

Yes! If you do not feel as if you’re the right candidate for a hair transplant we do offer other treatment. We offer ATP, or advanced tricho pigmentation – this is a pigmentation delivery system that replicates the appearance of hair follicles. The treatment is great for those who might be a bit too early for a hair transplant and want to add the appearance of density or even those who have no hair and want to replicate the appearance of a full head of shaven hair.

You can take a look at some of the amazing ATP case studies here.

Book a consultation

Although there are factors that can determine if someone is a good candidate for a hair transplant, this doesn’t mean those who differ to this cannot have a hair transplant. Every person is different and every transplant is different. The best and most accurate way to see if you’re right for a hair transplant is booking in for a consultation.
